We explored how a throat spray containing lactoferrin, among other ingredients, impacts sore throat pain associated with the common cold. In a robust double-blind, randomized controlled trial, we gathered data from 157 participants who self-administered treatments over two days. This study aimed to determine whether combining lactoferrin with other agents could enhance symptom relief during cold episodes.
Our findings revealed that sore throat pain intensity significantly decreased among participants receiving treatments that included lactoferrin. The spray led to a reduction in pain intensity scores by approximately 68-75%, depending on the specific formulation used. While the study showed a promising decrease in sore throat and other cold symptoms like nasal discharge and cough, it's important to note that the effectiveness of lactoferrin was not isolated but incorporated into a combination therapy.
Overall, supporting respiratory health and reducing associated inflammation appears to be beneficial for treating common cold symptoms. However, lactoferrin's specific role, given it was administered alongside other active compounds, remains uncertain and requires further investigation to fully understand its individual effectiveness.
